A dynamic PRACE Scientific and Industrial Conference (PRACEdays) was again part of the European HPC Summit Week (EHPCSW) which took place from 28 May to 1 June 2018 at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference week was packed with fascinating keynote speakers from academia, industry, and government.
The European HPC Summit Week 2018 – PRACEdays18 welcomed 343 attendees from academia and industry. The University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (PRACE Member and local host) created a pleasant conference environment and provided excellent logistical support.
The plenary sessions offered a range of scientific achievements and industrial applications of HPC, as well as European and international HPC strategy. Parallel workshops were held throughout the week in the frame of the PRACEdays18 as well as the ones organized by other HPC initiatives.

This year PRACEdays18 offered an intensive industrial track including a number of talks by awardees of PRACE SHAPE programme, showing their results.
At PRACEdays18, we heard how Invent Medical, supported by the SHAPE programme, used HPC for the first time to design 3D printed cranial remodelling helmets for babies from 3-12 months old; an inspiring story of how PRACE is helping the most vulnerable in society,
Dr Lee Margetts, Chair of the PRACE Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC).

Under the title “CoEs and HLSTs – What problems can they solve for me?” a panel discussion took place on Thursday between users and representatives of Centres of Excellent and High Level Support Teams.
At the traditional PRACE award ceremony,Sinéad Ryan, Chair of the PRACE Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), was delighted to present the PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for HPC to Xiaoxiang Zhu, German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany.
The PRACE Award for Best Scientific Presentation was given to Vincent Moureau, CORIA CNRS-UMR6614, Normandie Université, INSA et Université de Rouen, France for his presentation “HPC for the simulation of turbulent combustion in aeronautical engines”.
Hands-on training workshops for students were organised by the local host were a novelty on this year’s programme
Recordings of the User Forum Open Session “PRACE Peer Review Process – How to write a good proposal” and the Panel Discussion “CoEs and HLSTs – What problems can they solve for me?” were live-streamed, can be watched below.
PRACEdays offers a great opportunity to hear about the European HPC strategy and the scientific and industrial applications it enables. The conference continues to build its scientific programme and increase its visibility in the scientific communities, and to demonstrate the strength of European scientific computing.
Sinéad Ryan, Trinity College Dublin, Chair of the PRACE Scientific Steering Committee.
