PRACE's Founding and Mission

PRACE was established in 2004 with the goal of advancing scientific discovery and engineering research across Europe.

By providing world-class computing resources and services through a peer review process, PRACE aimed to enhance European competitiveness and benefit society.

This included strengthening the use of high-performance computing (HPC) in industry and promoting energy efficiency in computing systems.

PRACE's Initial and Second Phases

During its initial and second phases, PRACE consisted of up to 26 member countries.

These countries collaborated to create a pan-European supercomputing infrastructure, offering access to computing and data management resources to researchers working on large-scale scientific and engineering applications.

A select group of hosting members provided high-end HPC capabilities through Tier-0 supercomputers, while other members supported the broader HPC community in Europe and beyond.

PRACE's Support for HPC Communities in Europe and Future Ambitions - Scientific and Innovation Case

The European Scientific and Innovation Case for HPC is a comprehensive study covering various scientific fields and industrial applications that use HPC and related technologies.

Initiated in Europe in 2004 by the European HPC Task Force, it demonstrated the value of HPC in different communities, leading to investments in HPC.

The new Scientific and Innovation Case addresses traditional HPC as well as emerging trends like AI, machine learning, data management, and next-generation computing. Projecting future needs, the Scientific and Innovation Case provides recommendations for stakeholders.
