Project Access: How to Apply

Application Procedure

Calls will be announced on the PRACE website. You can also sign up to receive an e-mail alert when a new PRACE call is announced.

For Project Access (Single-Year or Multi-Year Access), you can only apply when Calls are open and applications must be submitted by the published closing date and time.

What can be applied for?

You can apply for computer time on the available Tier-0 supercomputer systems via Project (Single-Year or Multi-Year) Access Open Calls.

Who can apply?

Access to PRACE resources is meant solely for open R&D research purpose. All PRACE Calls for Proposals are open to academia & industry under specific conditions. Please carefully check the full eligibility criteria listed in the text of the respective Open Call for Proposals and Terms of Reference document. PRACE HPC centers may have further restrictions on who is eligible to access their own systems. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that they are eligible to access the system(s) they have applied for.

How to apply?

Applicants interested in applying to any of the PRACE Calls, need to complete an online application form in addition to the Project Scope and Plan template provided for each call. We strongly advise you to read the Application Guide before filling in the on-line application form.

Users are requested to select up to 3 scientific fields that define their research activities. PRACE follows the ERC panel structure to cover all fields of science. For the list of all ERC panel descriptors click here.

If you are a first time user of the PRACE application form, you will need to register via the PRACE on-line system by filling in all mandatory fields of the registration form. After submitting in your registration, you will receive an e-mail with your password. You can then re-enter the PRACE on-line system and begin to fill in the application form. After the form has been saved, you can continue to access it and update it before finally submitting it.

After submission, applicants can un-submit the proposal, edit their proposal and submit again. All un-submitted proposals need to be resubmitted before the deadline, otherwise will not be considered.

Please note that all applications must be submitted before the Call deadline. The PRACE on-line system will close at the exact (CET/CEST) time of the Call closure and it is not possible to submit any post-deadline applications. Furthermore, only proposals submitted via the platform will be considered for the call.

Nominating Reviewers

For each scientific proposal that you submit for Project Access, you will be able to propose up to 3 reviewers. PRACE will attempt to use one of these reviewers to assess your proposal. Please suggest experts who are in your field of research and who are able to judge the value of the research proposed in terms of advancements in your research field.

It is important that conflicts of interest are avoided. The reviewers that you propose should not be based at the same institution as you, be current collaborators (or have published with the applicant in the last 48 months) or have any professional or personal relationship to you. The nominated reviewers should also not have any financial or personal connections with the organisations involved in the proposal. For more details on the conflicts of interest policy click here.

You can also exclude up to three persons to be reviewers of your proposal, e.g.: competitors in your research field.

Documents to include in your Proposal

Applications submitted for Calls for Proposals for Project Access need to complete two main documents:

  • The online application form
  • The Project Scope and Plan (you can find the most up to date version in the description of each open call found under the Open Call Project Access page). Applicants should always use the last version of the Project Scope and Plan published on this page.

The online application form includes the following information:

  • General information: name of the project and research field(s)
  • Principal Investigator (PI) and collaborators
  • Amount of computing time requested in core hours (with the name(s) of the requested system(s))
  • Summary of the project
  • Recent bibliographic references that are relevant to the project (do not need to be authored by the research team members). There is no limit for the PI and collaborators
  • For Multi-Year Access, the applicant needs to explain the need for such an allocation and an estimation of the resource requested for the 2nd and/or 3rd
  • Technical information on the computer resources requested for Single-Year and Multi-Year Project Access, according to the technical guidelines
  • Describe what work has already been done to develop the code(s) to be used in the project, including the name and version
  • The communication plan to disseminate and publicise the results
  • If any part of the project is covered by confidentiality, please include a specification and justification
  • Information on links with or support from other programmes e.g. national funding, EC grants or awards, international collaborations.

In addition to the information required on the online application form, applicants must also submit their Project Scope and Plan following the template available in the online application.

All collaborators on the project need to be listed under and all mandatory fields need to be filled in for each collaborator. Please note that only collaborators listed in the application form will be allowed to access the PRACE resources.

Collaborative Working

PRACE encourages applicants to work collaboratively.

If you are undertaking a collaborative proposal, involving researchers from different institutions, only one PRACE application form should be completed for all the participants and one lead applicant (Principal Investigator) must be chosen. The need for the expertise of all partners involved in the project should be fully justified.


The abstract of the project that you submit to PRACE will be published on the PRACE website if the proposal is successful. If you do not want the abstract published then please highlight this in the application form by marking that the project is confidential. You will have to provide an acceptable reason for the details of the project being kept confidential.

The reviewers will be required to keep personal details of the applicants and the details of the proposal confidential. In exceptional cases it may be necessary for all personnel and reviewers handling a particularly sensitive proposal to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
