SUMMARY:PRACE@ISC 2026
DESCRIPTION:We had a great time at ISC 2026\, meeting so many inspiring people in HPC!\nKeep up to date with PRACE news and activities by subscribing to our newsletter! \n \nHPC\, AI\, Quantum: Powering Innovation and Sustainability\n\n\n\n\nISC 2026 connects scientists\, engineers\, and technology leaders to explore the future of high performance computing. The conference will examine today’s breakthroughs in artificial intelligence\, high performance computing and quantum technologies\, as well as what lies ahead. Additionally\, ISC 2026 is committed to sustainability by promoting energy-efficient and cost-effective computing\, while empowering the next-generation workforce to continue the community’s legacy of innovation. \nFind the PRACE company page in the ISC 2026 event app (SwapCard) by scanning this QR code: \n \n\n\nExhibition & Booth Activities\n\nPRACE will be present again on the ISC 2026 exhibition floor!\nCome visit us at booth A01\, near the entrance to the exhibit hall. \nA presentation of the HPCTRAIN Project will be given by Veronica Teodor at the EuroHPC booth (J30) on Tuesday 23 June at 17:00 (the other presentations at the EuroHPC booth can be found here) and at the GCS/FZJ booth (K02) on Thursday 25 June at 10:15. \n\nWomen in HPC\n\nAs an Affiliate of Women in HPC (WHPC) we support WHPC at ISC 2026.\n(please contact WHPC directly for any queries) \n\nBirds-of-a-Feather Session\nAligning HPC Strategies: Scientific and Innovation Case for HPC in Europe in light of the ETP4HPC SRA and other European HPC initiatives\nTuesday 23 June\, 14:15-15:15\, Hall G1 – 2nd floor\nGo here for the ISC 2026 schedule \nSeveral strategy papers for HPC and AI in Europe are published on a regular basis. PRACE is updating the Scientific and Innovation Case for HPC every 5 years. ETP4HPC\, the European Technology Platform for HPC is issuing the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for HPC approximately every two years addressing the European HPC HW\, SW and application technology development. Both reflect in particular the state of the European Advanced Computing ecosystem\, which includes in-production HPC and AI infrastructures and emerging Quantum Computing (QC) resources. The EuroHPC JU publishes every year updates of its Multi-Annual Strategic Plan (MASP) which describes the state-of-the art in HPC\, AI and QC HW\, SW\, applications and use cases\, discusses R&D priorities for the next 3-4 years and recommends actions to be included in the EuroHPC JU work programmes. Last but certainly not least\, specific projects like SPECTRUM and communities have authored position papers and research agendas which s bring forward requirements and propose strategies for HPC and AI in Europe. These strategy papers\, case studies and research agendas provide valuable input for policy makers to design the future funding programmes and to justify the investments in HPC\, AI and Quantum Computing. They all aim to support sound policy decisions for investments and projects in order to strengthen Europe to keep pace with the global race in HPC\, AI\, and QC. However\, the accelerating convergence of HPC\, AI\, data infrastructures and emerging QC resources — together with the growing integration of large-scale European Research Infrastructures (such as CERN\, SKAO and similar facilities) — makes systematic cross-analysis of these documents both timely and necessary. In this BoF we will have a closer look at the individual recommendations contained in the latest versions\, and we will compare the key findings and messages of the Scientific and Innovation Case for HPC in Europe with the recommendations of the ETP4HPC SRA and the EuroHPC JU MASP. We will identify and discuss areas of strong alignment between demonstrated HPC impact and strategic research priorities. More important however\, we will highlight gaps\, mismatches\, or underrepresented topics between the strategy documents\, and discuss these with the audience. By doing this the proposed BoF will help to create a synopsis\, include feedback from end users\, operators of HPC/AI/QC resources\, providers of HW and SW technology in the European HPC ecosystem\, and foster a productive dialogue between these and policymakers and\, and strategic planners.

The 1st European Scientific and Innovation Case for HPC was initiated by the European HPC Task Force already back in 2004. This first exercise was crucial for the development of the European HPC ecosystem with first national states investing in a competitive HPC infrastructure. Later on\, the EC engaged together with the member states in EuroHPC JU funding a European HPC infrastructure. Since research and technology\, especially in the field of HPC / IT technology are developing extremely fast\, also the Scientific and Innovation Case needs to be updated regularly in order to reflect these new trends and technologies. The last European Scientific and Innovation Case was published 2018. The Scientific and Innovation Case was and it is still very important to secure funding for a HPC infrastructure by demonstrating the achieved results and predicting possible results as well as the need for a sound investment in software and skills. It is also instrumental for ensuring a strong link between the user needs and the large investment in a HPC infrastructure. \nThe Scientific and Innovation Case provides an in depth understanding of the current use of HPC systems and state-of-the-art in different communities including industry. Beside the traditional scientific simulation fields in fundamental-\, life- and earth science\, energy and material research\, engineering and industrial application\, new fields like social sciences and humanities will be addressed in the new Scientific and Innovation Case as well. The Scientific and Innovation Case is crucial in order to understand the current social challenges and analyse the social impact of HPC on our society in general. \nThe Scientific and Innovation Case also addresses new trends and technology. Today\, AI and machine learning are rapidly evolving technologies also impacting the traditional simulation science. In the same way AI is becoming increasingly important also the fast-growing amount of data needs to be considered. The next generation computing with new algorithms and completely new approaches to solve mathematical problems will be discussed also in respect to energy efficiency. \nThe Scientific and Innovation Case is aiming at predicting future post exascale needs and trends. The analysis of the present results and the prediction of future possibilities will be instrumental for formulating recommendations for all HPC stakeholders\, especially funding agencies and politicians. \nDuring this BoF the main findings and recommendations of the Scientific and Innovation Case will be presented and discussed. For a sound scientific case it is crucial to get as many views as possible in a structured way and to perform a sound gap analysis to ensure that all relevant ideas and topics will be addressed. Science and research both academic as industrial are international endeavours based on joint discussions and sharing ideas. The purpose of this BoF is to have an open discussion with members of the research and industrial HPC community and to receive thorough feedback.

This year the workshop highlighted the current education and training R&D of the PRACE partners. One of the challenges of the PRACE training centres is to support a growing base of HPC users from science and industry with little or no HPC experience. The workshop provided a platform to discuss how to handle this challenge. Since March 2017\, PRACE has been providing MOOC’s via FutureLearn. A short presentation gave an overview of the experience with this so far. In addition\, the workshop addressed the clearly observed convergence of Data Science and Computational Science research methods\, which has an impact on HPC education as a whole. \nBack to Top \n\nBack to PRACE@ISC

SUMMARY:PRACE@ISC 2012
DESCRIPTION:PRACE – The European HPC Infrastructure at ISC 2012\nISC 2012 took place in Hamburg. \nOn 17th June 2012\, at the start of ISC’12\, PRACE held its annual PRACE Scientific Conference (also known as PRACE Day) at the Radisson Blu in Hamburg\, Germany. A line-up of 8 presentations of outstanding and award-winning scientists was complemented by keynote speeches by Kostas Glinos\, Head of Unit “GÉANT & e‐Infrastructure”\, European Commission and Maria Ramalho\, Managing Director\, PRACE aisbl and a session of the PRACE User Forum presided by its Chairman\, Turlough Downes. The day was moderated by Richard Kenway\, Chair of PRACE Scientific Steering Committee & Conference Chairman. \nThe PRACE Day proved a popular addition to ISC’12 with 230 registered participants. The event was held in conjunction with the ISC’12 Asia Day and gathered scientists from a wide range of disciplines as well as industry specialists\, European Union officials and the press. Germany\, the UK and the USA were the best represented among the 35 countries present. \nThis diverse audience was treated to in-depth presentations of research done by some of the first projects to receive major allocations of time on PRACE’s leading-edge supercomputers. From droplets in rainclouds to plasma fusion – the 6 presentations showcased the variety of research supported by supercomputing. Whether the aim is to understand how clouds participate in both warming and cooling the atmosphere; to promote inertial confinement fusion as the internal combustion engine of plasma fusion; or answering the questions surrounding turbulent entrainment (when does “large” become “large enough”?)\, each scientist underlined the need for powerful computing resources to enhance and speed up discovery within their field. The talks highlighted connections between disciplines\, the impacts on society and the vital role of PRACE facilities in enabling their research\, conveying the excitement and breadth of the research to everyone in the room. \nThe session of the PRACE User Forum provided valuable insights to the issues that users of supercomputers struggle with\, such as the bandwidth to and from PRACE sites\, access to data storage beyond the end of a time allocation period\, and support for complex workflows. The aim of the User Forum is to provide a platform for users to share experiences and discuss with the service providers improvements to procedures and operations. With the participation of the audience this session of the PRACE User Forum saw animated discussions on problems and solutions\, pointedly summarized by Richard Kenway: “It doesn’t mean it’s impossible\, it just means somebody will have to pay.” \nFurther details of the PRACE Day can be found below. \nA “PRACE Prototypes evaluation” BoF session was also held\, the press release of which can be found below. \n\nPRACE Day 2012 Details\n\n\n“PRACE Prototypes evaluation” BoF\n \nFurthermore\, a PRACE award was given. \n\nMore details on PRACE ISC 2012 Award\n\n\nBack to PRACE@ISC
